Dental Implants

Dental Implants

You just lost one of your permanent teeth, now what? Luckily, there are lots of different restorative dentistry options available for you at Chesterfield Family Dental. Of course, nothing can compare to your natural teeth. However, dental implants are the closest solution you can find that will give you back your natural smile and the natural function of your teeth. This secure and well sought out dental procedure is one our top recommended solution for missing teeth because of all the amazing benefits of the procedure. Although they are a bit on the pricier side, dental implants are worth the cost. Find out why dental implants in Springfield are so popular for replacing missing teeth.

What are Dental Implants?dental implants

Dental implants are titanium screws, or posts, that are surgically inserted into your jaw to act as tooth roots. They are then used to permanently connect dental crowns, bridges or dentures for a secure and natural feeling fit. You won’t have to deal with removable partial dentures or the annoying adhesives you need to use with dentures. Dental implants secure your restorations in place so you never have to worry about having missing teeth or dealing with your restoration falling out. This strong but fake tooth root is designed to last you the rest of your life with proper care and to securely anchor your restorations in place. Whether you want to anchor a full set of dentures, replace a single tooth or several, the possibilities are endless with dental implants in Springfield.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Unfortunately, not every patient is a good candidate for implant dentistry. Before considering the surgery, Dr. Buzbee must first examine the prospective candidate’s mouth by completing a dental exam, x-rays, and a CT scan. This will help tell us whether or not you have an adequate amount of bone mass and if your teeth and gums are healthy enough to secure the implants in place. In some cases, patients need to undergo gum disease treatment. Patients may also need to have a bone graft in order to generate enough bone mass to secure the implants in place. Without proper bone mass, the implants will fail and the surgery and money spent will be for nothing.

Other factors that determine if a patient is a good candidate for dental implants include the following: the patient must have healthy gums, the patient must not be an alcohol or substance abusers, must not smoke, and must be committed to taking care of their oral health. We don’t recommend dental implants for pregnant women, those who have chronic and uncontrollable diseases, those who have received any high-dose radiation treatments to the head or neck, those who take certain medications like steroids or anything that suppresses the immune system and lastly those who grind or clench their teeth. To be sure you are or are not a candidate for dental implants, it’s best to discuss this with Dr. Buzbee at our Springfield dental office.

Dental Implants Procedure

Once our dentist has given you the green light for your surgery, we will give you a local anesthetic and any sedation dentistry if you’re feeling nervous and we will surgically insert your implant(s) in their proper spot we found in your x-rays and CT scan. We will then secure a temporary restoration to your implants like a crown, bridge or dentures while your gums heal. For the next few months, your gums will be healing and we will have your permanent restoration being made in the lab. Once your gums are completely healed, you permanent restoration is installed and you are good to go! There’s nothing else you need to do aside from caring for your dental implant.

Benefits of Dental Implants

dental implants

One of the top benefits of dental implants is that it is the most natural feeling dental restoration. Your restoration will be comfortable and it will feel similar to your natural teeth. Many of our patietns who were dealing with removable dentures before are pleased with their new found comfort and the convenience of not having to take their dentures out to clean. Your dental implants will give you back the appearance of your smile and help you eat and speak normally. You can enjoy corn on the cob or a steak without the worry of dentures falling out, or not being able to chew without teeth.

In addition, dental implants help your jaw generate bone mass due to the false tooth root inserted in your jaw. Your jaw recognizes this tooth root and it tells the bone mass to hold it in place. Saving the bone mass in your face can prevent premature aging and other side effects like a droopy face or loss of your jaw line. You will stay looking young and your teeth will stay put! Lastly, dental implants help keep your other teeth in place. Without a restoration, your teeth adjacent to the missing ones would normally start to shift over to the empty space. Dental implants help prevent this from happening!dental implants

Dental Implants Care

Just like you would with your natural teeth, it’s important to brush and floss your teeth as normal. Your top priority with dental implants is keeping your mouth healthy, otherwise, your implants can fail. Keep up your dental hygiene with regular visits to our Springfield dentist office as well as the at-home care with mouth wash, brushing your teeth and flossing. This will help your implants last for the rest of your life. You may need to replace your dentures, crowns or bridges that are attached to the implants down the line. These are not meant to last forever, but it doesn’t hurt to care for them any less.

The staff is so warm and welcoming from the moment you walk in the door. Even though my son is a bit apprehensive about going to the dentist since he had to have four teeth pulled in the past, he is still always happy to see them. Dr. Buzbee and his staff are so great and patient with him. He leaves with a smile on his face and no cavities!
